The Algarve, with its warm climate and golden beaches, boosts some 30 plus golf courses – this number could well double in the next few years as there are many new projects planned for golf destinations in the region. The golf courses in the Algarve have been voted the ‘Best European Golf Destination’ by the IAGTO – the International Association of Golf Tour Operators – in 2000 & 2006. The A22 motorway, called the Via Infante, runs from Lagos in the west to Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border in the east. From this motorway it is easy to access the golf courses spread along the coastline of the Algarve, both north and south of the motorway. Then after a good game there’s the Atlantic Ocean for a quick swim to cool off before enjoying the varied night-life the Algarve has to offer, from superb 5 star urbanisations to a local 'tasca' restaurants, the sea food is a must here washed down with a chilled bottle of white wine!  Golfing on the Lisbon Coast
In the Lisbon area the various golf regions within a radius of some 90 kilometres have been recently grouped together to form the Lisbon Golf Coast. This now combines the regions of the Costa Oeste, Estoril and Sintra, Costa Azul and Ribatejo Golf. In the Lisbon Golf Coast there are some 24 courses and, as the Algarve was awarded in past years, in 2007 the region was awarded the prestigious prize by the IAGTO of the Best European Golf Destination. Indeed Praia D’el Rey, near the beautiful historical town of Óbidos with it’s medieval castle, won the Golf Resort of the Year – Europe 2007! The courses in the region tend to be less crowded than those in the Algarve with the new, improved road system has made access from Lisbon to these golf clubs easy. Lisbon is blessed by a very pleasant climate and as well as the golf the region there are many historical monuments, beaches to enjoy and gastronomic delights for all to enjoy. |
